A fine Regency mahogany cellarette of a fabulous faded colour. The dome shaped lid and front decorated with a central panel of well figured flame mahogany veneer bordered with rosewood stringing and a mahogany crossbanding. The interior having ten mahogany bottle dividers, raised on turned and reeded tapering legs with original brass cup castors.

The exceptional quality of this piece, along with the style of the leg and base mold, strongly suggests that it was crafted by Gillows of Lancaster.

A 17th Century Oak & Inlaid Leeds Coffer in fabulous clean original condition.

The piece is of solid construction with a good two-piece top. The whole front is carved with stylized foliage and mythical beasts, the inlaid marquetry panels in contrasting bog oak and holly depicting courting swans and flowers.

It retains the original ring hinges, clean drawer linings, interior, and back. Almost all of the original marquetry and inlaid banding are still in place.

Elizabethan in character, a style that continued within the prosperous 17th-century cities of Leeds and Halifax. For similar examples of mid-17th-century inlaid furniture attributed to Yorkshire, see the Shibden Hall Collection, Halifax, West Yorkshire.

A superb example of an oak coffer or mule chest from the late 17th century featuring a wonderfully carved pair of Dragons or Wyverns to the panels.

In fantastic condition retaining the three original ring hinges, all oak boarding, the original drawer runners and iron escutcheon.

The brass handles are later additions but look to have been added in the early 18th Century rather than the single drawer pull.

Interestingly the background of the carving and scratch mouldings have been ebonized to make the carving stand out.

An excellent example standing well up on its feet and of a great colour and surface.

A 16th century boarded oak clamp-front meal chest or ark, Welsh Borders, circa 1550
Having a typical dome-lid constructed using three overlapping boards wedged and tenoned into the upright and extended shaped-ends.
Fantastic colour and surface, good condition having a couple of minor repairs and losses only to be expected on an item of this age.
An ark was typically used for the storage of grain, such as meal, corn and flour. Traditionally it is thought the lid was not fixed in place and once removed the dished underside allowed use as a trough for kneading dough.
Literature:
Cescinsky and Gribble, Early English Furniture and Woodwork (1922), Vol. II, pp. 11-12, figs. 9-11, illustrates two comparable arks, both dated to the 15th century. See also Ralph Edwards, Dictionary of English Furniture (1986), Vol. II, p. 29, fig. 3.
